Safer and more intuitive communication between automated vehicles and other road users
Designed for implementation in the EC CCAM project AWARE2ALL, the first prototype of visual external lighting system to enhance interaction between automated vehicles and vulnerable road users (VRUs) was presented at EUCAD 2025.
Developed by FEKA Otomotiv, the visual lighting module is integrated into the vehicle’s rear combination lamp. It provides high-resolution and dynamic visual cues (symbols and animations) from the vehicle to all road users, thus enhancing the communication architecture of autonomous systems and traffic safety.
This innovative approach transforms traditional automotive lighting into an intelligent, context-aware communication interface capable of conveying complex visual messages based on real-time traffic scenarios and use case requirements.
The dynamic lighting control system processes contextual data via advanced algorithms that automatically select suitable visual messaging patterns based on predefined use cases. The module can autonomously adapt visual feedback to various traffic scenarios such as parking manoeuvers, pedestrian/zebra crossings or vulnerable road user (VRU) pick-up and drop-off situations
Real-life testing was conducted with users at FICOSA facilities and valuable insights were gained at EUCAD 2025 regarding the integration of the system into European regulatory frameworks and its applicability across diverse traffic scenarios.
