Exploring CCAM mobility through Digital Twins

17 September 2026

By creating dynamic virtual replicas of real-world environments, digital twins are transforming how researchers design, test and improve the future of CCAM mobility, enabling them to anticipate challenges and explore solutions in a safe and controlled way.

The integration of advanced visualisation capabilities and novel technologies into the digital twin enables key functionalities such as the simulation of traffic management strategies, the deployment of early warning mechanisms, and the use of interactive decision-support dashboardsโ€”helping transform complex data into actionable insights for operators and decision-makers.

In Horizon Europe CCAM project FRODDO, each pilot is embedded in a specific context, i.e. addressing distinct challenges such as sensor integration, real-time traffic management, AI-driven adaptation, and the digital twin is thus tailored to each pilot’s environment:

  • Ljubljana‘s pilot explores how users interact with automated vehicles, with the digital twin capturing vehicle position, Early warning system alerts, as well as trust and comfort levels for future automated systems that are efficient, intuitive and reassuring.
  • Inย Athens, the digital twin enables the simulation of traffic management strategies in specific scenario (with disruptions, events and CAV penetration rate), and the prediction of public transport demands, allowing the comparison of solutions improving traffic fluidity and reducing environmental impact.
  • By integrating data from smart infrastructure and connected systems, Modena‘s digital twin provides a shared, real-time representation of the road environment, including traffic prediction, average speed or incidents.
  • Inย Bursa, the digital twin supports, in a factory environment where traditional navigation systems may be limited, the real-time monitoring of autonomous tow trucks activity and performance indicators, so that operators can continuously improve operations’ efficiency.

Across all pilots, digital twins act as a powerful bridge between the physical and digital worlds and help turn complex mobility challenges into actionable solutions.
