Advancing Infrastructure Readiness to support CCAM deployment across Europe

As Europe accelerates the deployment of Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM), the readiness of road infrastructure—physical, digital and communication—has become a decisive factor. The EC-funded AUGMENTED CCAM project addresses this challenge by providing a common framework and tools to identify, structure and assess infrastructure elements required for CCAM deployment.

AUGMENTED CCAM has developed a harmonised Physical, Digital and Communication Infrastructure (PDI) Support Classification Scheme enabling road operators, public authorities and mobility stakeholders to better understand infrastructure needs across different vehicle automation levels and operational contexts.

This common language is a key step toward interoperability, comparability and coordinated investment decisions at European level.

Next to that, it has established a technology agnostic service operational framework for CCAM, featuring all key elements of PDI enabling CCAM.

Finally, it has developed a common evaluation framework for iteratively assessing PDI-enabled solutions for CCAM as well as a common and multi-layered impact assessment framework, identifying the methodological approach and the KPIs for assessing the impacts of PDI-enabled solution for CCAM with regard to Automated Vehicles (AV) Operational Design Domain (ODD), traffic safety, traffic efficiency, infrastructure functional safety, quality of service, trust and security of CCAM, driving behaviour of non-automated connected and non-connected vehicles, cost-efficiency and environment.

To translate research into actionable outcomes, AUGMENTED CCAM delivered a suite of open and interoperable digital tools, designed for practical use by infrastructure managers and decision-makers:

AUGMENTED CCAM also addressed a long-standing gap in European R&I projects by introducing a robust, transparent and replicable Technology Readiness Level (TRL) assessment methodology. By combining consortium self-assessments, independent expert reviews and consensus meetings, the project established an objective TRL baseline for tested solutions—strengthening their pathway toward deployment.
