AUGMENTED CCAM completed first round of trials

The first round of AUGMENTED CCAM (ACCAM) pilot tests in France, Latvia, and Spain has provided key insights into how Physical, Digital, and Communication (PDI) infrastructure can enhance Cooperative Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM).

At the Latvian test site (Biķernieki racetrack), participants engaged in three scenarios involving CAVs:

  • emergency vehicle overtaking an autonomous car (both vehicles receiving real-time notifications from traffic management centre and autonomous car moving aside/changing lanes to allow the emergency vehicle’s passage);
  • autonomous vehicle alerted to vulnerable road users (VRUs) who might enter its path (by roadside unit detecting approaching pedestrian and informing CAV which (sensors’) view is blocked by an obstacle);
  • temporary road works affecting the CAV’s path and vehicle able to plan a bypass manoeuvre ahead of time thanks to advance information from traffic management centre.

French test sites Valeo and Vinci Autoroutes together tested insertion driving manoeuvres on open road on the A10 Highway with PDI solution/ robust V2X message communication.

The Spanish site’s first round of tests were carried out for the following services : (1) VRUs Protection ; (2) Traffic Management Optimization based on Vehicle Probe Data from CCAM ; (3) Emergency Vehicle approaching ; and (4) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based Non-Equipped VRU Protection.

Trial participants experienced the scenarios both with and without PDI solutions active. Initial findings confirm the significant added value of advanced infrastructure in improving road safety, traffic flow, and logistics operations. Most users’ comments focused on the developed Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), which delivered infrastructure warnings and recommendations. Their feedback will be taken into account to refine the solutions and the CAV demonstrators for the next round of pilots.
