Cruise LLC and Waymo LLC to conduct commercial passenger service using driverless vehicles
In the United States, in San Francisco, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has granted Resolutions today, expanding the operating authority of Cruise LLC and Waymo LLC. This expansion enables both companies to provide commercial passenger services using autonomous vehicles and to set fares for rides at any time of day.
The recently approved Resolutions follow guidelines outlined in a 2020 CPUC Decision. This Decision mandates that autonomous vehicle companies must submit an Advice Letter to operate as passenger carriers using driverless vehicles or to make substantial changes to existing driverless passenger services, particularly related to passenger safety measures. The CPUC carefully assessed Cruise and Waymo’s Advice Letters to confirm compliance with the Decision’s licensing requirements, prioritizing passenger safety measures.
