Driving interoperability through standards: Insights into PoDIUM’s standardisation activities
The EC project PoDIUM aims to deploy new innovative use cases of Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) solutions based on advanced Physical and Digital Infrastructure (PDI) technologies and combined cellular and ITS V2X communication. The project’s use cases involve multiple components, which need to interoperate seamlessly. For their successful demonstration, the use cases rely on the interoperability of the communication procedures and the data set exchanged between the components.
Essential to achieve interoperability, namely of communication procedures and dataset formats applied in the V2X and CCAM environments, standards are also relevant for safe and cybersecure operations in all use cases. The PoDIUM use cases apply a wide range of standards from diverse organisations, many of which are applied implicitly by the use of compliant components:

PoDIUM’s implementation of public (2X) standards in CCAM advanced use cases operated in real conditions show possible limitation or discrepancies in the technical specification. Based on the compliancy experience in PoDIUM, contacts have been established with the ETSI1 Technical Committee for Intelligent Transport Systems (TC ITS), which develops and publishes a series of ITS Standards, e.g. Technical Specifications to define procedures and data models for V2X functions. The purpose is to further analyse possible adjustment necessary related to the implementation of V2X Common Data Dictionary (CDD)2 Standard. The growing importance of cybersecurity and AI trustworthiness matters in CCAM are also topics for cross-project and multi-stakeholder cooperation.
