Germany deploys first cab-less Level 4 autonomous truck in daily public-road operations

21 September 2026

Germany has authorised the deployment of its first cab-less SAE Level 4 autonomous truck in daily logistics operations on public roads. Einride and Lidl in Germany are operating the vehicle without a driver or safety operator onboard under an official permit issued by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

The autonomous truck is transporting goods between a Lidl warehouse and distribution centre and a Lidl retail store. The permit follows a safety validation process conducted with the KBA and enables the vehicle to operate in defined conditions on public roads.

The deployment marks a transition from autonomous freight pilots towards regular commercial logistics operations. Einride and Lidl plan to expand the route towards a multi-stop distribution model, while further deployments within the Schwarz Group are under discussion.

According to the companies, the initiative aims to assess how autonomous freight transport can be integrated into everyday logistics operations, while also addressing driver shortages, continuity of goods flows and supply-chain resilience.

Germany has established a regulatory framework allowing Level 4 automated vehicles to operate on public roads under defined conditions. The deployment provides a further example of the practical application of this framework to heavy-duty freight transport.

The project combines automated driving and zero-emission transport, with the cab-less vehicle forming part of Einride’s autonomous and electric freight operations. It also involves collaboration between Einride, Lidl in Germany, Schwarz Corporate Solutions and Schwarz Digits.

The deployment contributes to the development of Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) in Europe by providing experience with the operation, validation and integration of highly automated freight vehicles in real-world logistics environments.
