New benchmark for automated logistics: first driverless border crossing between Sweden and Norway

29 October 2025

In September 2025, an autonomous truck crossed the border on the E18 in Ørje, Norway equipped with Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) technology enabling real-time communication and compliance with customs procedures. The demonstration was a key milestone of the EC co-funded Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) project MODI, and offered a glimpse into tomorrow’s mobility—where automation, data exchange, and digitalization redefine how goods move across borders.

“The demonstration showed how technology can harmonize border processes and enable autonomous vehicles to cross efficiently. The benefits are clear: faster customs clearance, improved accuracy, reduced congestion—and a meaningful step toward addressing Europe’s truck driver shortage, which stood at over 426,000 unfilled positions in 2024.” (Ola Martin Lykkja, MODI Project Manager and RUC Lead at Q-Free)
