16 July 2026

Together with other European associations active in Research and Innovation for Road Transport – ALICEEARPAECTRIERTICOEUPAVEFEHRLFIAIRUPOLIS, and UITP – the European Technology platform ERTRAC advocates in a position paper for dedicated funds, and coherent funding coordination between R&D under Horizon Europe and market implementation under the European Competitiveness Fund, to address Road Transport Research additional needs.

The continuity of European collaborative research is critical to support the systemic transformation of the whole mobility system, in complementarity with the Joint Undertaking proposed within the next Multiannual Financial Framework to support R&I in the automotive sector1.

The recommended System approach, taking a holistic view of the mobility system’s core elements (road users, physical, digital and energy infrastructures, and all types of vehicles), is crucial to deliver benefits to society and achieve the twin transformation – green and digital2 – of the European transport system. Topics such as urban mobility, public transport, logistics, road safety, physical and digital road infrastructure, energy infrastructure, active modes, shared mobility, etc., are fundamental to preserving and improving the mobility of people and goods.
