PAVE Europe White Paper on AV Application in Goods Transportation and Logistics
The potential for autonomous vehicles (AVs) in goods transportation and logistics operations is both vast and highly promising. Autonomous technology is already playing a transformative role across multiple use cases, streamlining operations, improving efficiency, and offering tangible economic and environmental benefits.
The Partners for Automated Vehicle Education Europe (PAVE Europe) has released a white paper exploring the diverse applications of AV technology in the transportation of goods and the evolving landscape across off-road goods movement, last-mile delivery, and long-haul transport.
The White Paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of autonomous vehicle application in goods transportation and logistics, including the key challenges and opportunities for adoption. It provides real-world examples of the technology’s integration into logistics systems for the three identified areas gaining traction:
- Off-road Goods Movement (in controlled environments such as warehouses, factories, and ports), where AV technology enhances safety and operational efficiency.
- Last-mile Delivery: Autonomous systems have the potential to change urban and suburban delivery networks, ensuring faster and more reliable deliveries, and reducing traffic congestion/emissions.
- Long-haul Transport: autonomous trucks for long-distance goods transportation address driver shortages, increase road safety and optimise supply chain efficiency.
This paper aims to serve as a resource and guide for policymakers, industry, and the general public to better understand and embrace the economic and societal benefits of autonomous vehicles in goods transportation.
