The Data Governance Act and the action plan on intellectual property

7 December 2020

The Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager gave a speech on two proposals: the Data Governance Act and the action plan on intellectual property.

The European Commission proposed new regulations on European data governance. The proposal is the first of a set of measures announced in the 2020 European strategy for data. The instrument aims to foster the availability of data for use by increasing trust in data intermediaries and by strengthening data-sharing mechanisms across the EU.

As for the new Action Plan on Intellectual Property, it aims to help companies, especially small and medium-sized companies (SMEs), to make the most of their inventions and creations and ensure they can benefit our economy and society. The Action Plan’s objective it to enable the European creative and innovative industry to remain a global leader and at speeding up Europe’s green and digital transitions. In particular, the Action Plan sets out key steps to improve the protection of IP; to boost the uptake of IP by SMEs; to facilitate the sharing of IP to increase the technological uptake in the industry; to fight counterfeiting and improve the enforcement of IP rights; and to promote a global level playing field.
