Traffic safety
The traffic safety impact area addresses the impacts of CCAM on the number of accidents and injuries of different severities.
Traffic safety is measured by the number of fatalities or injured persons within or relative to a specific entity, such as area, road section, road user or population group, vehicle or vehicle kilometre travelled (VKT). These measurements are chosen because the traffic safety policy objectives of Vision Zero aim to eliminate injuries and minimise the severity in road traffic accidents.
The number of fatalities and injuries is determined by three key factors: exposure, risk and consequence. The next figure illustrates the factors affecting the three dimensions of traffic safety.
