POLITICO weights in on the role of Tariffs and Automate vehicles in regard to relationships between USA and EU, mentioning FAME
A recent article published on June 3 by Politico frames recent developments in the conflict between the U.S. and the EU over tariffs in the wider framework of automated mobility.
Politico reports that Brussels is loosening its rules on autonomous cars coming closer to the US system, in an effort to push the Trump administration to retreat the tariffs it imposed o imported cars and car parts. According to the article the measure was included in a scoping document of proposed compromises sent to EU member countries on May 19.
The article points out how U.S. and EU rules on technology and standards differ greatly. Where the U.S. System relies on a self-certification model regarding standard compliance for example, the European system utilises a type approval process, i.e. it is the authorities that verify that vehicles meet standards. Consequently, U.S. tech is much harder to use in Europe, and this is something criticised by American carmakers, which include Tesla. As part of the European’s testing landscape the article mentions FAME’s Framework for Testing Automated Vehicles on Public Roads exact
