CCAM at the ITS European Congress in Lisbon

CCAM at the ITS European Congress in Lisbon

26 May 2023

Very intensive time for the CCAM Partnership in the past three days during the ITS European Congress that took place from 22-24 May in Lisbon.

With the theme ITS: The Game Changer, the ITS European Congress, organised by ERTICO – ITS Europe, showcased the latest technologies, ITS services, and solutions for transportation. CCAM Partnership was visible in the exhibition area where we had a joint stand with ERTRAC. Visitors were encouraged to provide by the end of the month their feedback to our public consultation of the CCAM Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) update.

On the morning of 23 May at the plenary “CCAM: How green can you go?”, in the keynote speech, Anne-Lise Thieblemont presented Qualcomm’s study showing that the introduction of 20% connected vehicles in EU cities may lead up to 18% reduced emissions. Speakers agreed that CCAM can make cities safer, greener and more livable, but all stakeholders have to work together, we cannot afford to work in silos. It is important to emphasize the benefits of CCAM to society, which would ensure the buy-in from European citizens: CCAM will deliver on both green and digital transition, and additionally on the competitiveness of the European industry.

Nevertheless, the climate issue is complex: there is no magic bullet. All the existing and future solutions must be exploited and all the pieces of the ecosystem connected together to achieve our goals. To that end, Rosalinde van der Vlies, the Clean Planet Director at the European Commission DG RTD underlined several times the important role played by the CCAM Partnership.

CCAM Partnership’s Clusters Leaders, Co-leaders and Partnership Delegates were in action during the congress as moderators and/or speakers in many sessions. To start, on 22 May, Françoise Guaspare (Ile-de-France Mobilités) participated in the Smart Mobility Summit of Cities & Regions. In the afternoon of 23 May, Bastiaan Krosse (TNO), Oihana Otaegui (Vicomtech), and Adrià Ferrer (IDIADA) discussed Scenario Based Validation for whole lifecycle CCAM safety and performance assurance (SIS 26). On 24 May, Máté Verdes deep-dived into infrastructure-supported Automated Driving on high-level roads at SIS 71, organised by CEDR.
All the speakers came to the same conclusion, as at the recent meeting, the CCAM States Representatives Group members, that there is no framework in place to clearly identify what the future vehicles will need from the national road authorities (NRAs). The discussion focused on NRAs’ roles, responsibilities, and tasks. Regulations were also touched upon and so were investments in physical and digital infrastructure.

Several CCAM Partnership’s projects were present in Lisbon: AWARD and MODI shared a stand in the exhibition area, and several projects were present at the ERTICO stand (FAME, IN2CCAM, SUNRISE). IN2CCAM, SINFONICA & PoDIUM presented their objectives at the European Commission stand.

ERTICO also presented new results of the consortium on the European Automated Valet Parking (EAVP) platform. This consortium aims at coordinating the dissemination and deployment of the L4 parking function in Europe.

During all three days, one of our members, CTAG, offered a live demonstration of their last-mile autonomous and connected shuttle.

Certainly, during this edition of the congress, the ITS community had a good chance to experience and discuss CCAM in relation to traffic management and the system approach.
