Co-creating framework conditions for advanced connected and automated mobility
Since their invention, and their subsequent mass production and global use over the last century, cars and other motorised vehicles have certainly evolved. The advancement of automated driving and connectivity are mutually reinforcing megatrends. With everyone turning their eyes to the so-called ‘level 2 and level 3’ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), automotive suppliers are turning their attention to the next generation of smart mobility technologies. And although regulatory challenges still put the brakes on full automation, sophisticated ADAS solutions will be a part of our daily lives very soon. These solutions promise great benefits to society, such as increased safety, drastic reductions of traffic congestion and pollution, as well as enabling data-driven mobility and intelligent transport services.
The development of connected and automated mobility is a key innovation driver in the EU, a concerted cross-sectoral effort, involving the automotive industry, telecom companies, and regulators, both at the national and global level. That is why the CAD Knowledge Base platform, which provides an interactive space to share the latest discoveries and advances on research programmes in different industries, is an essential tool in the co-creation of effective smart mobility services that will bring ever more safety and comfort to society. CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, is an active part of the CAD Knowledge Base community, and is partner of the ARCADE project.
From the perspective of CLEPA, for Connected, Cooperative & Automated Mobility (CCAM) to be a success, it is essential to ensure that advanced mobility technology can enter the market in a way that reassures both authorities and road users of its safety and reliability. In this context, the CCAM Partnership, which is a multi-stakeholder alliance, has a strategic role to play for the EU automotive industry when it comes to promoting and facilitating the development, testing, and validation of the necessary technologies – including large-scale trials – and enabling experience and best practices to be shared so as to empower an expansion of the Operational Design Domain (ODD) of highly-automated vehicles. Disseminating the activities and outcomes of this partnership is, among many other activities, a key element of the CAD platform that is a reference on the actions undertaken towards autonomous mobility.
Enabling smart mobility is one of CLEPA’s priorities and the topics addressed and promoted by the CCAM Partnership are regularly discussed and agreed upon within the association’s R&I Working Group and with the specialists involved in the CLEPA R&I Safety Automation and Connectivity Expert Group. This is in line with other activities such as the EU projects ARCADE and ENSEMBLE.
Also, every year CLEPA actively pays tribute to the cutting-edge technology examples in the field of Connectivity and Automation during its Innovation Awards. The 2020 edition took place last November and gave a good overview of the interesting developments in this field, with its high number of innovations and patents that are supporting the implementation of connected and autonomous mobility.
To find a virtual space where the involved parties can bring together their views and expertise and share their goals and challenges is key to supporting delivery of the mobility of the future that society demands.
