During the recent TRA2024, the European Commission DG RTD announced the launch of a Staff Working Document on connected and automated mobility (CCAM) in Europe. After the Declaration of Amsterdam in 2016, in which Member States urged the Commission to support the transition towards automation in road transportation, and the resulting EU-level strategy (EC Communication “On the road to automated mobility: An EU strategy for mobility of the future”) in 2018, this document takes stock of progress made and highlights 10 European achievements bringing Europe closer to deploying CCAM.

The scope of these achievements ranges from R&I, regulatory, financing, to policy actions, technical standards, infrastructure adaptation, as well as data and connectivity initiatives.

Several research and innovation (R&I) success stories are highlighted, namely the public-private partnership on CCAM and 19 European CCAM projects, demonstrating the impact of EU investment in CCAM amounting to a total of €1 billion allocated for the duration of Horizon Europe.
