European Space Agency car platooning trials going live in 2022
The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced that its passenger car platooning project is going to begin with live trials in Q1 2022.
In collaboration with European automotive engineering consultancy Horiba Mira and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) developers GMV Nottingham Scientific Limited (NSL), the project aims to advance the process of optimising the co-ordination of traffic streams by adopting several advanced technologies.
One example is the use of cooperative positioning. This advanced technology allows for several benefits such as improving the flow of traffic, reducing the environmental impact, and improving the throughput on existing motorway infrastructure.
The project is funded by the ESA under the ESA Navigation Innovation and Support Programme (NAVISP) and will inform the ESA’s future developments and contribute to applications of GNSS and communication technologies within the automotive sector.
