SAFE-UP project: Safety concerns of novel seating positions explored

25 February 2022

SAFE-UP recently interviewed biomechanics expert Jason R. Kerrigan, Associate Professor at the University of Virginia (UVA), Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Director of UVA’s Center for Applied Biomechanics. The interview discusses the possibility of keeping passengers of autonomous vehicles (AVs) safe in new seating positions, as they are being investigated and developed in SAFE-UP demo 1, through Occupant Monitoring System (OMS) and sled testing activities.

The interview discusses the most promising and efficient ways to protect AV occupants in novel seating positions, the possible negative impact on occupant restraining from emergency braking or steering, and the effects of self-selected individual human sitting posture on protecting the occupant when crashing.
