UK to allow “hands-free” automation on the road by the end of 2021

The UK government announced that by the end of 2021, “hands-free” automated vehicles offering automated lane-keeping systems (ALKS) will be legal to operate on UK roads. 

The government’s statement explicitly allows manufacturers to label vehicles supporting automated lane-keeping systems as “self-driving”. The statement invoked a debate among UK stakeholders on the effects of selling these vehicles as “self-driving”, with multiple stakeholders raising concerns that the wording might raise false expectations with consumers, leading to potential misuse of the technology.
